Awarenessinfohub has gathered that Ethiopia has officially commenced construction of Bishoftu International Airport (BIA), a mega project set to become Africa's largest aviation hub, with a capacity to handle 110 million passengers annually.

The project, located in Bishoftu, approximately 40 kilometers southeast of Addis Ababa, is expected to be completed by 2030.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who laid the cornerstone for the project, emphasized that BIA will be the largest aviation infrastructure project in Africa's history, solidifying Ethiopia's position as the continent's leading air transport hub. The multi-airport strategy aims to support Ethiopian Airlines' expanding global network and sustain the country's rapid aviation growth.

The $12.5 billion project will be developed in phases, with the first phase accommodating 60 million passengers annually and eventually expanding to 110 million. The airport will feature four runways, extensive terminal space, and support infrastructure for passenger and cargo operations.

Key Features:

- Four parallel runways

- Terminal capacity to handle 110 million passengers annually

- Parking facilities for 270 aircraft

- Multi-lane motorway connecting to Addis Ababa

- 38-kilometer high-speed railway

- Airport city with hotels, business parks, and logistics operations

Bishoftu International Airport is expected to enhance Ethiopia's global competitiveness, expand trade and tourism corridors, and position the country as a premier intercontinental hub. The project aligns with Ethiopia's national economic reforms, industrialization plans, and long-term aviation strategy.

Ethiopian Airlines will fund 30% of the project, while the remaining capital will come from international lenders and development institutions. The African Development Bank has committed $500 million and will lead efforts to raise $8.7 billion.

This ambitious project marks a significant milestone in African aviation, positioning Ethiopia as a major player in global air travel and tourism.
