"Been Putting Fake Smile For Almost A Year..." - Victor Boniface Opens Up On His Career Setbacks

Victor Boniface

Awarenessinfohub has gathered that Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface has undergone surgery for a knee injury and will be out for several months, Werder Bremen confirmed on Saturday. The 25-year-old forward, on loan from Bayer Leverkusen, had been struggling with the injury since last summer and had missed the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025.

In a statement, Werder Bremen said Boniface would undergo surgery on Saturday, performed by Prof. Dr. Christian Fink in Innsbruck, Austria

The club's Head of Professional Football, Peter Niemeyer, expressed relief at the decision, saying, "This provides clarity for all parties. Due to the rehabilitation process, we no longer expect Victor to play for Werder this season".

Boniface, who has featured in 11 matches for Bremen this season, scoring no goals but contributing two assists, took to social media to express his frustration. "Been putting fake smile for almost a year. But God knows why all this is happening. Grateful to God," he wrote on X.

This is not Boniface's first major injury; he has suffered two anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries and several minor injuries in his short career. His injury history had previously scrapped a potential loan move to AC Milan in the summer, with the Italian club citing medical concerns.

Werder Bremen confirmed that Boniface's loan deal will remain in effect until the end of the season, but he is unlikely to feature again this campaign. The club is now focused on supporting Boniface's recovery, with a view to returning him to full fitness for the next season.

Boniface's absence is a significant blow to Werder Bremen's attacking options, and his injury history raises concerns about his long-term fitness. The Super Eagles will also miss his services, having already struggled with injuries and form issues in recent months.
