Awarenessinfohub has gathered that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has imposed a $100,000 fine on the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) and suspended two players for their roles in a post-match brawl following Algeria's 2-0 defeat to Nigeria in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarter-finals.
The sanctions stem from incidents that occurred after the match at the Grand Stade de Marrakech on January 10, 2026, where Algerian players and officials confronted match officials, leading to a chaotic on-field brawl involving Nigerian players. The referees had to be escorted off the pitch for their safety.
CAF's disciplinary committee found Algeria guilty of several violations, including misconduct by players and officials, use of smoke bombs and throwing objects by supporters, and failure to comply with security measures.
The breakdown of the fine includes:
- $25,000 for inappropriate behaviour by players and officials
- $5,000 for players' misconduct leading to multiple bookings
- $5,000 for use of flares by fans
- $5,000 for throwing objects by fans
- $10,000 for failure to comply with security regulations
- $50,000 for offensive gestures by supporters
In addition to the fine, goalkeeper Luca Zidane was suspended for two matches, while defender Rafik Belghali received a four-match suspension, with two matches suspended.
The Algerian FA has announced its intention to appeal the sanctions, stating it will contest the decisions through official channels.
