ADC Slams Tinubu's Government Over US Airstrikes in Sokoto, Questions National Sovereignty

Awareness.com.ng has gathered that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has slammed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration over the recent United States airstrikes on suspected terrorist locations in Sokoto State, describing the move as a sign of failure in tackling Nigeria's security challenges.

Awareness.com.ng has gathered that in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the opposition party acknowledged the serious security threats facing the country but expressed concerns over the involvement of foreign troops on Nigerian soil, citing sovereignty and governance issues.

"While we recognise the gravity of the security situation, the presence of foreign military forces raises red flags about our nation's independence," Abdullahi said. The ADC supports measures to restore security but stressed that Nigeria must preserve its sovereignty.

The party views the US Africa Command (AFRICOM) airstrikes on December 25, 2025, as a temporary measure, warning against relying on foreign intervention to solve domestic security problems. "This is a failure of leadership," the ADC said, criticising the government's priorities on revenue generation over national security.

The ADC also criticised the communication around the airstrikes, noting that Nigerians heard about the strike from the US President's social media post, with Nigeria's response coming through the Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesperson.

"This shows a lack of understanding of the situation's gravity. The government must be transparent about the strike's impact and take responsibility for securing Nigeria," the party urged.

The statement adds fuel to ongoing debates about Nigeria's security strategy and reliance on foreign assistance.
