Awarenessinfohub has learnt that in a daring operation, Nigerian troops have rescued 31 civilians who were abducted by terrorists during an Easter church service in Ariko village, Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna state.
According to reports, the terrorists, who arrived in large numbers, raided the ECWA Church in Ariko village on Sunday, taking several worshippers hostile. However, the swift response from the Nigerian Army foiled the attack, with troops engaging the abductors in a fierce firefight.
A statement issued by the Nigerian Army on Sunday evening revealed that the troops were alerted about the abduction and promptly mobilized to the scene. With the support of the local community, they pursued the fleeing terrorists, overwhelming them with superior firepower.
"The pressure mounted by the advancing troops forced the terrorists to abandon 31 hostages, including one injured victim who is currently receiving medical attention," the statement read.
Mark Bawa, councillor representing Awon ward in Ariko district, confirmed the incident, saying the terrorists operated for about an hour before fleeing into the bush with their victims.
The army also recovered the remains of five victims who were killed by the terrorists before they fled into the forest.
"The fleeing terrorists are believed to have sustained significant casualties, as evidenced by blood trails along their escape routes," the statement added.
