Awarenessinfo hub has gathered that the Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has reiterated his country's opposition to the US-led attack on Iran, despite President Donald Trump's threat to cut off all trade with Spain. Sánchez stated that Spain will not support actions that violate international law and threaten global peace.
The dispute began on Monday when Spain denied the US permission to use jointly operated military bases on its territory to attack Iran. Trump responded by calling Spain a "terrible partner" and announcing that the US would cut off all trade with the country.
Sánchez emphasized that Spain's position is clear: "no to war." He drew parallels with Spain's stance on Ukraine and Gaza, stressing the importance of upholding international law and promoting peace. "The question is not whether we are in favour of the ayatollahs; nobody is," Sánchez said. "The question is whether we are on the side of international legality and, therefore, of peace."
The Spanish government has expressed confidence in its ability to mitigate the impact of a US trade embargo, stating that it has the necessary resources to contain the effects. The EU has also expressed solidarity with Spain, with European Council President Antonio Costa backing Madrid's position.
The conflict highlights the strained relationship between the US and Spain, with Trump criticizing Spain's defence spending and its refusal to support US actions in Iran.
Sánchez has urged the US, Israel, and Iran to end the conflict before it's too late, warning against repeating the mistakes of the past.
