Awarenessinfohub has gathered that Guinea's military leader, General Mamadi Doumbouya, was officially sworn in as president on Saturday, January 17, 2026, following a landslide victory in the December 28, 2025, presidential election.
The inauguration ceremony, held at the 55,000-seat General Lansana Conte Stadium on the outskirts of Conakry, was attended by several African heads of state, including Vice President Kashim Shettima of Nigeria, and representatives from the African Union and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
Doumbouya, who seized power in a 2021 military coup, secured 86.7% of the vote, with his closest rival, Yero Baldé, garnering 6.59%. The Supreme Court confirmed his victory on January 5, 2026, despite Baldé's petition alleging electoral manipulation, which was later withdrawn.
The new president faces significant economic challenges, with half of Guinea's 15 million population living in poverty and struggling with food insecurity, according to the World Food Program. However, Guinea is poised to leverage its vast mineral resources, including the world's largest bauxite reserves and the Simandou iron ore deposit, to revitalize its economy.
The Simandou project, a 75% Chinese-owned venture, began production last year after decades of delay and is expected to boost Guinea's GDP by 26% by 2030. The government plans to launch a sovereign wealth fund by the second quarter of 2026, aiming to diversify the economy and invest in infrastructure, education, and healthcare.
Doumbouya's presidency is expected to focus on economic development, with plans to increase revenue from the mining sector and improve governance. However, critics argue that his government has cracked down on dissent and opposition, raising concerns about human rights and democratic governance.
