Awarenessinfohub has gathered the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has suspended its two-week warning strike, effective October 22, 2025, citing progress in negotiations with the Federal Government regarding the 2009 agreement and other outstanding issues.
The union's National President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, announced the decision on Wednesday after an overnight National Executive Council (NEC) meeting that concluded at 4:00 a.m.
Key Demands:
Conclusion of the Renegotiated 2009 FGN-ASUU Agreement: ASUU seeks to finalize the agreement to improve funding, welfare, and working conditions for university staff.
Release of Withheld Salaries: The union demands payment of three and a half months' salary arrears owed to lecturers.
Sustainable Funding for Public Universities: ASUU seeks funding to revitalize public universities and improve infrastructure.
Payment of Outstanding Salary Arrears: The union demands payment of 25-35% salary arrears and promotion arrears spanning over four years.
Release of Withheld Third-Party Deductions: ASUU seeks payment of withheld cooperative contributions and union check-off dues.
Cessation of Victimization: The union demands an end to the victimization of lecturers in certain universities.
The union suspended the strike to reciprocate the efforts of well-meaning Nigerians, including students, parents, and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), who intervened in the dispute. ASUU acknowledged that while progress has been made in negotiations, more work is still required.
ASUU has given the Federal Government a one-month ultimatum to address its demands. If no concrete steps are taken within this timeframe, the union reserves the right to resume the strike action without further notice.
