Awarenessinfohub has gathered that the human rights activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore, has been arrested by the Nigeria Police Force in Abuja. The arrest occurred on Thursday morning, shortly after Sowore left the Federal High Court premises in Abuja.

Sowore was in court to attend the trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who is facing charges of alleged terrorism and treason. The activist had previously led a protest demanding Kanu's release on October 20, which saw 13 people, including Kanu's brother and lawyer, detained by security agents.

While the exact reason for Sowore's arrest remains unclear, it is believed to be connected to his involvement in the #FreeNnamdiKanu protest and his defiance of police directives. Sowore's associate described the arrest as "unnecessary" and stated that Sowore had planned to honour a police invitation before being taken into custody.

The arrest has sparked outrage among rights advocates, who describe the action as an attempt to intimidate dissenting voices and undermine the country's judicial system. Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong condemned the arrest, calling it "preposterous" and demanding Sowore's immediate release.

Sowore, a former presidential candidate and longtime advocate for social justice, has been arrested multiple times in the past for his activism. His most notable detention came in 2019 after organizing the "RevolutionNow" protests against bad governance in Nigeria.

The arrest of Omoyele Sowore has raised concerns about the shrinking civic space and the government's tolerance for criticism. As the situation unfolds, many are watching to see how the authorities will respond to the growing demands for justice and human rights in Nigeria.
